Key Terms

Check digit: A final digit calculated from the preceding ones so a scanner can tell that the code was read correctly instead of accepting a mistyped value.

X-dimension: The width of the narrowest bar or space in a linear barcode. Every other element is a whole multiple of it, so it sets the physical size of the symbol.
